Joey Bonifacio is a Filipino-Canadian filmmaker and physician based in Toronto, Ontario. He works at an inner-city hospital and youth shelter, providing care to LGBTQ and homeless youth.

Drawing from his background in medicine, theology, and anthropology, Joey turns intimate—and often uncomfortable—conversations into cinematic spaces for public reflection. His films invite audiences to question their assumptions and engage deeply with complex human experiences. He completed his MFA in Documentary Film at the Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University in 2022.

Joey directed True Colors: Conversations in Gender, an auto-ethnographic feature documentary exploring his experience providing pediatric gender-affirming care in Canada. The film has been praised for its raw honesty and ethical sensitivity.

Joey is currently developing his next documentary project, which investigates the global migration of Filipino nurses, a subject that combines personal heritage with critical questions of labor, identity, and postcolonial legacy. Through his work, Joey continues to challenge boundaries, between disciplines, between filmmaker and subject, and between audience and story.
